Impact

Balloon vine grows rapidly into the tops of trees where it forms a thick curtain of stems, excluding light and harbouring pests and diseases. The weight of the plant contributes to canopy collapse and ecosystem destruction.

Distribution

Balloon vine occurs naturally in tropical Africa, Asia and America and was probably introduced to Australia as an ornamental garden creeper.

Spread

Balloon vine produces fruit capsules that can be carried by wind and float freely on water, dispersing the plant along waterways. The plant also regrows from root fragments.

Description

Ballon vine's most notable feature is the balloon-like fruit, which is formed after flowering. This 'balloon' is a thin-walled capsule, which contains several large black seeds.

Habitat

Balloon vine favours gullies, creeklines and the margins of rainforest.
